If you signed up for Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) in 2006 or earlier, there is a good chance you are operating on version 2 of the product. If so, it is more important than ever to upgrade to Microsoft’s latest version, Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) v3. Recent documentation shows that WSS v2 has inherent downfalls when it comes to information back up. To understand these issues, you need to understand how v2 is set up. When customers are operating v2 in a shared environment, all customer information is stored on one common database. If a data corruption were to occur, it could affect all v2 sites on that server.
With WSS v3, each customer site receives its own database, even in a shared environment. This means that if one client database was to become corrupt, it is less likely to affect the other databases on that server. In addition, on the document level, WSS v3 includes a redundant recycle bin. This feature helps ensure critical information isn’t deleted accidentally and can be restored by the user or administrator.
To find out whether you are operating on the most current version of WSS: login to your site. If you are in v2, there will be a menu bar at the top of the page with a “Help” tab. Click “Help” and a pop up window will appear. At the bottom of the window, it will show a copyright of 2003.
